Port forwarding and hosting game servers

Recommended Posts

Hi
I'm mainly interested in this VPN because my college campus blocks all inbound traffic and port forwarding would be useful as I often host Minecraft/Terraria games for a few friends.
However, on your FAQ page about port forwarding it says

NOTE: you can't reach your listening service(s) through the VPN server exit-IP address from the very same machine that's running it/them and is connected to a VPN server, or from any other machine connected to that same VPN server

I take it this means that if I'm hosting a Minecraft server from my computer through the VPN, I will not be able to connect to it? This seems like a deal breaker to me and I'd just like clarification.

Thanks

If your machine MINECRAFT is connected to AirVPN SERVER, you can't use SERVER's exit IP from your MINECRAFT machine to connect to that very same MINECRAFT machine. That'd be superfluous, anyway, since if you are on MINECRAFT you can simply use its localhost address to connect. :)

Your friends using CLIENT1, CLIENT2 etc. on the other hand can do that.

Hi Cecep,

I understand what you're asking, and you could just connect using your local IP, or if the game supports it, using 127.0.0.1 (which always points to the device you're on)

Don't forget you can use the Port Forward with a Local port specified, so you don't have to change your windows firewall settings :)
