setting up .ovpn in ubuntu linux - different methods - the same ?

Recommended Posts

To connect I usually just download an .ovpn file and type in terminal "sudo openvpn <.ovpn file>" and the connection works.

Or I go to gnome connection manager and "import saved configuration", import the .ovpn file and use that to connect graphically.

However, I have noticed other vpn providers - they only provide these .ovpn files for Android. For ubuntu linux set ups they recommend manually importing the certificates and changing the settings in the advanced settings manually.

Is there a difference in these methods? is one method more secure ? is it okay to just import a whole saved configuration from an .ovpn file for ubuntu linux, rather than manually entering the certificate etc ?
