pfsense gateway monitoring with Air's DNS servers

Recommended Posts

Trying to use Air's DNS server at 10.4.0.1 to validate gateway status and seeing timeouts. Anyone got gateway monitoring working without resorting to external DNS (8.8.8.8 or OpenDNS etc?)

Works for me.  But, there could be real packetloss happening on the route.  I've seen it lately during peak hours with the new servers in Dallas.

However, it seems you're trying to say that DNS lookups aren't working either and you're resorting to using some other DNS.  That's a whole different problem.

DNS is working fine via DNS Resolver. I just need a mechanism for detecting if a VPN connection goes down for failover and the 10.4.0.1 always shows 100% loss.

I can use 8.8.8.8 etc and the gateway status is returned correctly, I'd just prefer to use a end point on the Air end of things rather than adding additional complexity of 3rd party DNS servers to the status if possible.

Are you using pfsense 2.4?

yes, but it didn't work on 2.3.x either as far as I can recall.

I was on 2.4 for a while and reinstalled 2.3.4 because I was getting the same problems in 2.4.  2.3.x works for me.

well thats good to know for sure. I'll see if theres a bug open already or raise one, it does seem like it should work.
