Hi there

I am new to using VPN services in general, and I was wondering whether geographic location plays a role in choosing what VPN provider to use. Does one's location have an impact on the speeds experienced when browsing on the web?

I know the internet is global (obviously), but from what I understand, to access the internet, requests must first be served from my PC to an ISP (which is local) and then to the outer Web.

Thanks in advance for your help

Hi,

It depends on what you use a VPN for.

If you just want to browse the Internet randomly, the location is irrelevant but for some (geo-restricted) websites you may want to have servers in certain locations e.g.: catch-up TV, streaming etc...

Also if you do online gaming, you'll need servers close to you.

As for speed, it is not just location, it also depends on peering, congestion, throttling, infrastructure etc. The only way to be sure is to try.

Hope it helps!

For me the location always was irrelevant. The number of hops, routers between me and my destination, plays a much bigger part in optimizing latency and throughput.
