Speed through Eddie is OK, but not through Router (RT-AC68U)

Recommended Posts

First of all, I'm a bit new to VPN's (tried several clients) and RT-AC68U (2nd day @ home), so be patient.

Also english it's not my mother tongue, so be more patient :-D

The question is as follows:

If I connect through Eddie it runs flawlessly, get awesome download speeds (only a ~3%-5% loss relative to download without VPN). Upload speeds are also great.

Then I shut down Eddie and configure the VPN router based (following the AsusWRT How-to). But when I try to configure my brand new RT-AC68U with latest Merlin firmware flashed, I'm getting a ~85% loss of speed. I also tried alternative ports, etc. One thing that I left untouched is DNS resolving in WAN settings because if I put DNS's suggested in the How-to I usually get failed connections and routing errors.

The point is, with Eddie AWESOME. With AsusWRT EPIC FAIL. Anyone can guide me through the world of VPN madness? It's a known issue and should search better? Any help is welcome

So I get the point. VPN through router is limited by router's CPU, so I can't achieve the speeds that Eddie (through PC's stronger CPU) is able to get.

I managed to overclock the router to 1400/800 mhz and got 32Mbit/s, getting connection drops every few minutes. So it's time to leave the stock firmware and return the router to Amazon. Pity.

it's still a good wifi router but won't get you the speeds you're looking for.

look to build your own pfsense box with a CPU that supports AES-NI, follow the guide in this forum for setting up pfsense with openvpn, and use the AC68 for a wifi access point.
