ANSWERED Is Eddie really this easy?

Recommended Posts

I'm new to AirVPN. My old VPN didn't have a client that worked with Linux, so I had to manually enter servers into Ubuntu's network manager. Basically there was a lot of fiddling, and I had to modify the etc/sysctl.conf file, etc. So this is what I'm used to doing. My old VPN seemed to be the most popular, and it was always recommended in articles, but after doing a lot of reading online it became much more clear to me that the people who really knew what they were doing were using AirVPN, so I switched to Air a few days ago.

After switching to Air I manually installed a few servers in my network manager, and everything worked fine. However, last night I installed Eddie on a live USB - just to see what it looked like. It worked perfectly, right out of the box, on a live USB! It's really quite amazing. But I'm left with the feeling that it can't be this easy... that I must be missing something. Is it really as simple as installing Eddie, entering my user-name and password, clicking the network lock button, letting Eddie find the fastest server for me, and that's it? Am I missing something? I don't have to install anything else? Or manually enter anything into my network manager? Or modify any system files? Just install Eddie and I'm done? Is it really this easy? Or am I missing something?

If someone will confirm, I'd appreciate it.

I have used it on Windows and OSX. However, I have not yet tried it on Linux. I can say for the other two operating systems it was that easy for me. No IP,DNS, or Webrtc leaks. (I use firefox to combat the WebRTC leaks). So, in short, yes, it's that easy. Just to be sure go to AirVPN's site IPleak.net to test for any leaks. If everything shows the address of the server you are currently connected to you should be good to go!

For the most part yea, its just install the client.

There's additional settings like the network lock feature and DNS options that should be set. But its all very quick and painless.

After setting up the network lock and enabling a dns option you can test for leaks at any of these sites.

https://ipleak.net/  this one is run by airvpn.

There's other hardening you can do in linux but none of it is required by the air client.

If you're looking for other stuff to check in linux.

-Run netstat -atnu and or netstat -vatp while disconnected from everything and see if anything is holding ports open.

-Scan your system with nmap or the gui zenmap for open ports.

A few sysctl.conf settings:

Before changing these feel free to read up on them and what they do.

net.ipv4.tcp_timestamps = 0

net.ipv4.conf.all.rp_filter = 1
net.ipv4.conf.default.rp_filter = 1

net.ipv4.conf.all.accept_source_route = 0
net.ipv4.conf.default.accept_source_route = 0

net.ipv4.conf.all.send_redirects = 0
net.ipv4.conf.default.send_redirects = 0

net.ipv4.conf.all.accept_redirects = 0
net.ipv4.conf.default.accept_redirects = 0

net.ipv4.conf.all.secure_redirects = 0
net.ipv4.conf.default.secure_redirects = 0

net.ipv4.conf.all.log_martians = 1
net.ipv4.conf.default.log_martians = 1

net.ipv4.icmp_echo_ignore_broadcasts = 1
net.ipv4.icmp_echo_ignore_all = 1
