Incredibly slow upload but blazing fast download with OpenVPN Android

Using OpenVPN for Android 0.6.44 on Android 5.1.1 with US carrier and getting 10-20 maps download but only 50-100kbps uploads. Using standard UDP port 443. Have tried several different AirVPN servers with same result. Typical speeds without VPN are 30-50mbps down and 10-30mbps up.
