Not sure about the crash but you can try the following to resolve the checking route issue: Uncheck "Check if the tunnel effectively works" in (Preferences>Advanced>General) I also had to use TCP (Preferences>Protocols) and uncheck "Check if tunnel uses AirVPN DNS" (Preferences>Advanced>DNS) to get it working for me...
