issues in China, rhel 6.6

Recommended Posts

Hi

on my rhel 6.6 system I can't install mono for corporate compliance.

I have installed openvpn and was trying to use it from the console or via NetworkManager.

at the moment, I am connected from China via the corporate VPN but was looking at some independent solution.

when I disconnect the corporate VPN, and triy to connect using openvpn

udp 443 fails to connect (timeout)

ssh tunnel port 22 and ssl tunnel on 443 both connect

I get a tun0 device with a 10.... IP.

note that I had the openvpn config files imported in NetworkManager else resolv.conf did not get updated.

however if I try to ping the 10.*  dns server that appears in resolv.conf

I never get a reply.

I can't even ping google's own DNS servers

so after I connect via openvpn I am effectively isolated although with a 10.* IP address.

I even tried flushing my iptables but no change

(and anyway the tun0 device created by my corporate VPN dialler works fine)

suggestions welcome

I have made progress ! I am posting here connected through airvpn ...

- used the ssh port 22 alt.ip  configuration

- connecting to the America region

- not dialling openvpn with NetwrokManager

but launched on the command line

with Networkmanager though I had modified the connection to the hotel wireless not to use its dns servers

but to use Google's (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4).

I can't yet use Airvpn 's DNS servers

I can't yet use Airvpn 's DNS servers

after further testing, the ssh tunnel solution works with the following limitation

- using the chinese hotel wifi, asia servers do not seem reachable

europe and america are ok

-due to my platform (rhel 6.6)

I can't use mono so the airvpn packages can't be run (also the 'portable one' seem to require mono)

- if I import the opvn in Networkmanager, vpn connection succeeds and a 10.*** nameserver entry is added to resolv.conf

BUT

the connection is useless, cannot ping anything

if I use openvpn from the command line, resolv.conf is not updated

-even including the suggested line

up /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf

in the ovpn file is irrelevant as the platform does not include a  /sbin/resolvconf

so to use the Airvpn DNS I need to edit resolv.conf myself
