Is torrenting causing my speeds to go to zero?

Hi all,

 

I've been using AirVPN for a few months now. When it works, the speeds are ok. But I have a recurring problem that I haven't been able to resolve.

 

1. Connect to server (using either Eddie or OpenVPN client)

2. Begin torrenting

3. Speeds are fine for about 10-60 seconds, then slows to almost zero kbps. The connection does not 'disconnect', but no web pages load and torrent speeds reduce to nothing.

4. I manually disconnect and then reconnect, speeds are fine for another few seconds and then they slow down again.

 

Sometimes I get lucky(?) and I stay connected at proper speeds for 24 or even 48+ hours. But eventually I get the above problem and have to try a bunch of servers or keep reconnecting until it magically works.

 

Is torreting causing this? Are the servers detecting my torrent traffic and killing my speeds?

 

My environment:

Win Server 2012

Eddie & OpenVPN

I've tried a wide range of servers from different countries. I haven't found any servers that don't show this behavior.

Did you try another torrent client? Have you correctly configured your current one following the guides around here (disable uTP, etc.)?

they do on my boxes and it seems to not matter which app i use

if i'd read a manual i'm sure one might tell me about a setting to limit

something somewhere

 

but not gonna do that, plenty of boxes around so i just use a separate box to grab

the shows/movies and then:

# python2 -m SimpleHTTPServer 8000

 

then from another box to grab said file:

# wget http://192.168.1.101:8000/kewlshow.mkv

Can you share your torrent client's config? Have you disabled upnp, set static port for connection, enabled/disabled dht/pex...etc. ?
For best performance, add forwarded ports in the client area of your profile. Use those ports in your torrent client to connect, otherwise most of the connections wont be possible and you'll get poor performance, as it wont be able to connect to enough peers.

to use rtorrnet basics are:

 

right click a magnet link

copy magnet link

launch rtorrent from your terminal

hit the 'enter' key

paste url, enter again

hit the arrow 'up' key

you'll see two dots show up next to your torrent

it hasn't started yet

hit 'ctrl+s' that will start the torrent

once done 'ctrl+q' to quit

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think it was uTP as suggested. Disabling improved speeds and I did not "soft-disconnect".

 

And I've finally remade my downloading VM. It's now Ubuntu server, with OpenVPN and qBittorrent (uTP disabled) both running as a service at startup, along with Sonarr. Working great, no disconnects or speed drops so far!
