Can an administrator detect the use of VPN?

Recommended Posts

Every VPN can be detected. Your chance is to use one of the recent servers that have been published on AirVPN.

Otherwise, you'll need to host your own server and purchase a dedicated IP that only belongs to yourself.

Because every VPN is/will be detected by the same way: It's been used by several people and mostly likely one of t hem is doing bad things -> All others have to suffer because the IP is blacklisted.

VPNs are also detected as they are hosting companies, there is not much you can do about this. Some IPs of AirVPN are entirely clean get are banned from some places simply for being a server, and there's no reason for a server to access a site other than for a VPN.

Vpns have two different ways to be detected.

First, with the protocol. If you use your computer normaly (browsing internet) you use HTTP and/or HTTPS protocol. If your administrator (ex: in a job area) analyse the traffic that go in the router (the box), he will see that. If you use a VPN, the protocol isn't anymore HTTP or HTTPS but UDP/TCP instead. An administrator will know that you used a VPN because the usage of UDP/TCP isn't is not common for "normal" usage. BUT, AirVPN provide VPN over SSL.

This mean that the VPN traffic is wrapped into the HTTPS protocol used commonly for websites browsing.

The second way is by IP but this method is not used at all? because it's not effective. The administrator of your network will see a connection (HTTPS if you use VPN over SSL) on an IP that is the same (if you don't change your VPN location) So he might guess that you used a VPN.

If you talk about government agencies, they can determine if you use a VPN by IP because they know witch IP is commonly used as a VPN
