In English speaking countries multiple cases have established that child porn includes text and drawings. In Sweden and Japan people have been prosecuted for manga. Ever used a Bitcoin mixer? That's money laundering. They can add whatever they like to their agenda...copyright infringement, defamation, hate speech, unsanctioned conspiracy theories, "terroristic activities". Why wouldn't they?

Tor isn't your one and only anonymity option. It's just famous, stable and more flexible than the others.

These task forces are rarely a good idea, but this does not stop them from existing.

If the Tor Project was not part of this task force, who else will:

 

- educate that group about how Tor can actually help protect victims of abuse and stalking?

- stop that group from mistaking Tor for a criminal network that has to be fought against?

 

That is why I want Tor folks sitting at this table. This is lobbying, not collaboration with the enemy.

 

Of course - I would be extremely worried to see Tor compromise itself by implementing selective censorship or worse. But there is no evidence whatsoever that this is starting to happen.

Hmm well as long as this doesn't involve putting in backdoors that ruin it for everyone I don't object. The article isn't very specific, but I can't imagine Jacob Appelbaum agreeing to that.

Backdooring it would be a top priority for any LEA out there. But it's open source making it a little more convenient while detecting backdoors.
