ANSWERED Only some servers get a "Star" score in Country whitelist

Recommended Posts

Eddie 2.24.6
macOS 15.4.1 (Apple Silicone)

I have been wondering about this for a while already: I have certain countries whitelisted in Eddie - personally, I don’t really care which server is picked from the pool, but I noticed that only one country - Sweden in my case - has these “Star” ratings for some servers. The other countries in my country whitelist do not have any stars for the score.

As a result, when I click on “connect”, the server is only picked from Sweden and only from those few that have a score - all other countries/servers from my Whitelist are ignored, even if there are servers in other countries that have a lower Load than maybe those servers in Sweden.

Question: why does not all servers in my Whitelist have the “Star” score so that the server I connect to is picked from the entire whitelist? In other words: why does only some servers in Sweden in my case get the “Stars” for server score?

“Refresh list” does not assign any new scores to the list…

Many thanks! This helped in terms of that now all servers get the "star" score. Almost all have now 5 stars - is this intended? Are these scoring stars only available with "Latency" scoring rule? Still, some stars do show up during "Speed" scoring rule - but only a handful ...

Thanks a lot - I've seen this post in the past, much respect for you explaining all the calculations and explaining the difference between Speed vs Latency. But - correct me if I'm wrong - the "algorithm" of the scoring as you explain in this post, does not explain why the Speed score in my last left screenshot does pretty much not show any stars at all. Just for 4 servers out of my entire Whitelist.

I understand that there are different rules applied when choosing either Latency or Speed for the score, but shouldn't all servers get a score regardless of Speed or Latency chosen? :think:For Latency this seems to be the case in Eddie, but not for Speed. Could you maybe post a screenshot of your Eddie server whitelist for reference (in case you are using Eddie)?

It does, though. One of the variables in Score() is set to a high value, causing the addition to return a high number, which in turn yields a low decimal when scoreF is divided by 70 in ScorePerc() (= the star calculation).
It might be the ScoreBase variable since it's divided by a whopping 500 when ScoreType is Latency, and used as is when it's Speed (= divided by 1 in the code). I don't know where this one is set. Or it really might simply be the result of a high user count and high load, those are also "divided by 1" with Score and by 10 with Latency.

That's the thing: They all get a score, and that score is 0 stars if you select Speed. That the result of the calculation of ScorePerc(). We can debate whether it's correct or not, of course, since it does look kinda suspicious. :)

As for me, my best servers are NL with just three stars and less for Speed. For Latency, everything below 135 ms is 5 stars, above are less. But I'd sort by latency, anyway, and choose one of the top 10 with reasonable load; I wouldn't pay attention to some score. Doesn't reflect my needs, anyway.

It's probably also worth noting that I get shown portions of stars, too. Maybe the whole thing changed a little in the last four years. :)

Many thanks for explaining! No big deal, as a technical nerd, I love to understand these things why they are the way they are :D The scoring rule topic is not trivial though, glad you made a lot of it clear(er).

Bah... I had the same problem. Tried to switch to latency. Result? At the end of the refresh NO server had a latency value filled in. The Linux client is really subpar, I'm sorry to say. I have thought abandoning AirVPN in the past few months and I always refuse to myself on the basis of having paid years in advance. But things should definitely be handled better.
