I've searched for 4 days and still can't find this guy. Who and what is the French activist? This guy is like a ghost! What I can only learn is that he was convicted of serious crimes. I couldn't find the details in the article. what did he do? Doesn't explain. I can think of ten serious crimes.

What were serious crimes? Which category does it fall into? As stated above. I couldn't get any information. Sounds like a lie to me too. ! The man is referred to as a climate scientist activist.

I'm not overly familiar with the ProtonMail case, but like most incidents, this incident seems to occur because of an OPSEC failure.

The activist is a part of the Youth for Climate collective. This collective has done acts considered illegal in France. The email address in question has been used by the group. Their queries were successful when Swiss law deemed it as an illegal act as well, which compelled Proton to start logging and give metadata. I doubt that these people were using a VPN or Tor or any other obfuscation techniques. I think the sources you provided have stated enough regarding what the group has done so I'm not sure where your confusion lies on what he has done.

I had a lengthy discussion with the CEO on 2 occasions.

First when they launched eons ago, on how they were CERN based etc. I had rant-on-rant at the CEO who remained friendly and thanked for the feedback.

Second when the Swiss passed the IT law and P. claimed they allegedly are not subject to it. They are subject to it as was proven later. 6 months of logs to be kept at minimum for if law enforcement brings a court order. P. Claims it's all encrypted, but the law provides it needs to be on court order provided unencrypted, or the company becomes financially liable.

In addition, Swiss state monitors any IT connection coming in or out of its borders. Several docu's on the subject on Swiss television.

Proton VPN, email and Swiss privacy?
Crap away, as far as you can.
