My internet speed test (without a VPN active) usually clocks in at ~500 Mbps download and ~300 Mbps upload but the fastest I have been able to achieve on qBittorrent + AirVPN is 15 Mbps down. Even then, I only achieve that speed for a few seconds at a time before it goes back down to 3 Mbps down.

I am new to torrenting and only just finished setting up this combination but I have tried the following to troubleshoot my issue:

  • Multiple different protocols including OpenVPN and Wireguard on several combinations of IPV4 and IPV6  --  No noticeable change. If anything, I get lower download speeds on Wireguard.
  • Selecting the lowest latency server, the highest score, and the closest geographically  --  These were more or less the same with the speed actually dropping to 400 Kbps after a little tinkering.

I have little to no knowledge when it comes to networking so I would greatly appreciate a simple explanation if possible.

UPDATE: I have attached the most recent log file to this post. This is extremely frustrating and unacceptable especially since I have never had this issue with any other VPN that I have tried (granted, I haven't tried with qBittorrent before but this seems to be a problem with AirVPN not qBittorrent.

If you’re using WireGuard, try setting MTU to 1280.

I tried changing that in cmd but it seemed to revert itself when I disconnected and reconnected. Edited ... by uncertainmongoose

I find it the easiest to enter MTU 1280 in Client Area -> Config generator and download a WG config. I choose one of the closest locations or one that has many internet exchange points. Then I'm using plain Wireguard client from https://www.wireguard.com/install/. Next, I check with `ifconfig` or similar command to verify if MTU was applied. Then https://speed.cloudflare.com or https://fast.com.
