WARNING: 'cipher' is used inconsistently

Recommended Posts

Posted ... (edited)

Hi,

I recently moved to the experimental version 2.23.1 of Eddie.
Each time I connect to a server I get the following:
OpenVPN > WARNING: 'cipher' is used inconsistently, local='cipher AES-256-GCM', remote='cipher AES-256-CBC'
I suppose that the connection is finaly done using the local cipher.

Is is fine to not consider the warning and to assume that Eddie is working normally?

Thanks for your reply.

It's fine because from 2.4 onward ciphers are negotiated and the strongest picked.
Basically, with 2.4, it's "upgrade to AES-256-GCM when possible" regardless of --cipher unless --ncp-disable is given (which is not configured on the servers and removed in 2.6).
With 2.5+, the strongest cipher in --data-ciphers is picked (--data-ciphers on the servers can be seen on each server status page, like Alderamin).
