Looping 'auth failed, retry in 3 seconds' error

I am having trouble connecting to a recommended server. It tries to connect, flashed an 'auth failed will try again in three seconds' error message, tries again, and loops back to the beginning. I have tried starting a brand new account and it still won't work. I've tried un-installing and re-installing, logging out and logging back in, and a full system re-start. Any other suggestions? Anything else I can provide?
