But I cannot connect to any server in the US or Canada after attempting with about 8 or so, all of which showed active status and reasonable traffic at the time. Inactivity timeouts right after connection attempts usually hint at something dropping the connection silently, such as a firewall. proconsu1 0 Posted ... I tried disabling my firewall (Bitdefender) entirely, and that did not have any effect ,either positive or negative. After making the original report I did try using OpenVPN, and it had the same roadblock, total inability to connect, but only via UDP. When I forced it to use TCP instead, it connected, though the connection was, as expected, slower than a UDP connection would have been, too slow in fact for the purpose I had in mind (gaming). Doesn't need to be application-level like BitDefender or Windows Firewall, could also be your router. Can you check there whether things like "UDP flood protection" or "QoS/Quality of Service" are disabled? Are you connecting with a home internet line like DSL, DOCSIS/Cable or Fiber/FTTH, or via GSM/3G/4G? Or are you trying to connect in a "guest" network like at work, school or university? proconsu1 0 Posted ... I am leaning toward your thinking there. I sign in via the wifi hotspot function on my smartphone (GoogleFi - 4G). I suspect their network may be blocking the UDP connection. They didn't used to do this, and in fact it may be a local issue with a partner carrier's hardware. I should have a chance to test it elsewhere within a few days, several elsewheres actually. I'll see if it behaves any differently with a change of local carrier/location, then update if there is any new (and hopefully fully functional) behavior. In the meantime, are there any other particular indicators I should be checking or watching for? I already plan to trace routes from the various locations I'll be trying from, to see if I can pin down specific network providers. Quote Share this post Link to post

Not sure about the traceroutes you plan on doing, that's ICMP which is a dumb thing to block entirely. Though, on *nix traceroute has the -U switch letting you use UDP instead; maybe this can help.
