How to prevent VPN leaks in router

I have an Asus RT-AC66U router and want to set up my VPN connection in the router itself. The firmware is the stock firmware.

My question is how the router handles disconnects from the VPN. How can I protect myself such that drops in the VPN do not lead to my devices calling out to my ISP and bypassing the VPN? Does the router handle this and block all connections outside of the VPN?
