Some DNS tests suggest a misconfigured DNS nameserver for that domain (ViewDNS for example). Misconfiguration is what often lead to clients using AirDNS to not be able to resolve the IPs iteratively in the past. It often works recursively if you check with dig or so, but is generally a more stressing way of resolving queries, so it's not done by default. Maybe the secret of why it works with Cloudflare is that they're using recursive resolution as a fallback everytime they get these errors back, then cache the result for some time so that iterative queries can be returned normally.

Don't really know what the issue is. But the behavior is known. So you're not alone.
