android tv OpenVPN for Android on Android TV doesn't stay running after switching to another app

Running new AirVPN subscription using OpenVPN for Android on two TV boxes.
VPN connects and functional, but when I leave OpenVPN it mostly doesn't stay running.
Looked in options and don't see associated one to choose? Is staying connected controlled by the OpenVPN Android client or the imported ovpn file?
I have 'connect on boot' selected, and want VPN to stay running all the time on these boxes.

BTW, I tried this first with Eddie app and didn't have any luck there either.
