Can I add a VPN router over my regular router?

I currently have Unifi set up at home and want to continue using that as my primary internet connection. However, Unifi and OpenVPN aren't the best combo so I want to add an additional ASUS router connected to my Unifi using Ethernet and then create a VPN connection on the ASUS router. Will that work fine and anyone connected to the ASUS WiFi be secured? Also, my main ISP connection is PPPoE but I'm assuming that for the ASUS router, the internet connection will be DHCP that my Unifi router will provide?

As long as traffic from any interface will be routed through the VPN interface, I think yes.

The ASUS router will fetch addresses from Unifi. It will be a local IPv4 and, depending on the Unifi configuration, either a unique local IPv6 or a unique global IPv6 fetched via router advertisement or both.
