Using AirVPN on Free WIFI where it appears to not connect

This is more for future reference as most of the free WIFI locations I'm talking about I've been to and gone. Recently I was in Brussels at the hospital in Vilvoorde and at The Lodge Hotel in Vilvoorde. I think the issue with AirVPN in the hotel was just the hotel WIFI being useless. However, the WIFI in the hospital just refused to allow me to use AirVPN on my phone via OpenVPN. I don't believe I have the logs for that unfortunately. Just would be curious to know what is the cause.

However, yesterday I was in a shop in the UK and connected to their free WIFI. Had to go through their portal which I did. But still couldn't connect to AirVPN after. Here is a couple of screenshots for that.
