Can't use VPN for internet sharing on mac High Sierra. Connection to ethernet gets blocked when VPN is active

Hi there, I use to use NordVPN and when I turned on internet sharing my VPN on my mac would still work and the traffic going to my Ethernet for sharing wouldn't go through the tunnel, but I could still use the connection. Now, with airvpn I can't get any connection going through the ethernet if the VPN is turned on, on my mac. Ive tried turning off network lock and even forwarding the port in the preferences, but it still won't work. Can someone help me figure this out please? Thanks in advance!
