Synergy: Sharing Mouse and Keyboard

Hi.

I have two computers, one is on airvpn and the other one is on regular internet. I want to share my mouse and keyboard and I use this program called Synergy.

I saw a guide on how to connect through vpn and it says that the server should be on the regular internet computer and the vpn computer should be the client. So the procedure is to open a port on my router to the server computer and use the vpn computer to connect through that port.

I was wondering if anybody has this setup and whether this is the proper way to do it. Would there be any security risk? Thanks.
