Cannot connect to airvpn on Note 8 (profile worked on Android 5 device)

I was using AirVPN with the OpenVPN for Android client successfully on a Note 3 with custom ROM (running on Android 6.0.1) and had used it just fine on various ROMs and devices before that.

 

I now have a Note 8 (Android 7.1.1) and the exact same profiles and apps which used to allow me to connect, through the same WiFi routers, just will not work properly.

 

I can connect and seem to be able to ping 8.8.8.8 just fine (in fact google stuff usually seems to work, both in browser and out) but not normal websites.  Occasionally it will work, like maybe 1 out of every 30/40 connects.  I'm really confused and not exactly sure how to diagnose the fault.  I'd really appreciate some assistance on this one.
