Bad throughput after switch from 100mbit to 200mbit line

Recommended Posts

Hi forum,

I have a strange problem after I switched my 100mbit line to a 200mbit line.

Before the switch, with a 100mbit cable line, I got around 100mbit through the VPN tunnel.

Directly after the switch to the 200mbit line, the tunnel peaks at 60mbit. It makes no difference to which server I connect.

First I thought the ISP messed up the provisioning, but after killing openvpn and doing a speedtest, it showed 200mbit on the line.

Does anyone have an explanation for that?

The ovpn config was not changed after the switch.

However trying to tune it according to best practice with openvpn over gigabit lines etc (no fragment, MTU tune, ....) did not change a thing.

Any advice is welcome!

bye

OK, topic can be closed, the problem is solved.

Solution:
-Upgrade from Kernel 3.13 to 4.4 (i.e. Ubuntu 14.04 to 16.04)

-change openvpn config to include:

txqueuelen 1000
sndbuf 1048576
rcvbuf 1048576
tun-mtu 6000
fast-io
fragment 0
mssfix 0

Full 200mbit are not availabel through the tunnel. Which is the limit for my router CPU
