Port Forwarding Not Working P2P

I'm trying to use AirVPN's basic port forwarding options for P2P.  I have the VPN up on my router.  I forward a port in the client area and assign the same port number on my server P2P client.  However, when  I go to test the port, it fails.  They suggest not to forward the port on the router which I didn't do.  Is there anything I need to do differently than just opening the port on AirVPN?  I know its the VPN because when I disable it, the port is open.  When I go to check the ports in the forward ports page on the AirVPN site, it stays grey and says, "Not reachable on server over the external port 5****, tcp protocol. Error: 110-Connection timed out."  Also, which internal IP is being referred to in that forward ports menu?  

 

I would greatly appreciate any help.

AirVPN on Asus router running Merlin

Transmission setup on FreeNAS jail on 192.168.1.28

Testing port using Transmission remote client on laptop on my local network

I've tried US based and Sweden based servers.

 

What am I missing?

So I have read through and followed rainmakerraw's post found here: https://airvpn.org/topic/14949-help-with-port-forwarding/?p=30873 But the port is still being blocked.  Any suggestions?

Hi,

 

You also need to forward the port when connected to the VPN server, perhaps this will help.
