Hosting webserver or ssh but not via vpn

I am running linux have been using AirVPN with openvpn-client for a few days now and I am pleased with most things, however I want to host ssh-server and webserver and be able to reach them without going over the vpn.

How can I accomplish this?

I have been trying with ip route, iptables and source based routing as instructions from https://forums.openvpn.net/topic7163-15.html#p21267 but the problem seems to be that the rules matches when the vpn is disabled but not when it's enabled. So it seems like the problem is with some of the routes that are pushed from the server to the client. But I can't figure out which one of the routes. Anyone who have a clue or have trying to accomplish something similiar?
