Server Selection

What criteria does AirVPN use to determine which server it connects to on startup? Is it distance, latency, speed, or all of the above?  I'm paranoid that the server to which I'm connected is getting too busy and I constantly monitor the status page looking for the fastest/least trafficked server.

You can set it to what you want it to use.  Go to the servers tab and down at the bottom, select the scoring rule of your choice.

Depends on your goal.  If you want the best throughput, regardless of whether it connects to the same country, just select latency.  Speed will often connect you to another country, but with more available bandwidth available to you.  If there is any other reason, you can lock Eddie to specific countries or regions.

Why not just do a close server with low server load? When I select the "latency" option, a lot of servers in my country have lower latency AND less server load than the servers listed when on the "speed" settings which are in another country.
