dd-wrt / cell phone tether question

I just went through the setup for dd-wrt, and it wasn't working, so I wanted to see if possibly this is why:

 

to provide internet to my router, i set the wireless mode to "client" and use the wifi tether option on my cell phone.  (this is my only option, i don't have wired internet service where i live).

 

i tried changing tun0 to tun1 in the iptables settings, no effect, and double checked all my settings

 

it's a d-link dir-835, running build  v3.0-r30949 std (12/15/16)

There is a solution for this, but it's more complicated that running OpenVPN on your mobile device and running the router as a client as it is.

Your mobile device has probably better CPU than the DIR-835 so there won't be any performance impact.
