Secure alternatives to Skype that have video chat?

So i was curious, are there any alternatives to Skype that the community would recommend for security that still have the ability to use voice and video chats?

You should list cross-platform software, too. We've got all kinds of OSes in use among the users and they would appreciate a cross-platform approach to the question as well.

 

No, I don't know alternatives. Last time I've used a software like Skype it was still v5.

Most alternatives you're going to find use SIP. A project that looks promising to me is ring it allows you to use a SIP account but also has a DHT lookup by ID which is pretty cool.

You can't simply switch to another ecosystem just because it will require your contacts to switch as well, so there is no practical Skype replacement yet.

There are some promising messengers that allow secure end-to-end chats and voice/video calls, such as Wire.

I am using wire! It's just fantastic! I highly recommend it!
