New user with speed issues

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am new to airvpn, and VPNs in general.

I am not great at this stuff so any assistance is much appreciated.

I am using both a tablet and phone (galaxy s7) via wifi at home.

I have installed OpenVPN for Anndroid and have sucessfully set up a few configuration profiles which are working, and my VPN connecrion seems to be working.

However, today it is extremely slow. I am getting around 2mbps through tye VPN and get about 55mbps without VPN.

Have I missed a step? Do I need to do anything to my router? (Virgin super Hub 2)

Thanks for your help.

Android phones are not the best devices to go with if you need good OpenVPN speeds. The reason is lack of

hardware AES acceleration in their CPUs. Try to connect a computer behind the same router and check again.

No longer true mate, sorry. The S7 is good for a heck of a lot more than the OP is seeing, via AES-256-CBC (I tested my wife's). Here's some info from NIST:

2.Cryptographic Module Specification

2.1.Description of Module
The Samsung Flash Memory Protector V1.1 is classified as a multi-chip standalone software-hybrid
module for FIPS 140-2 purposes. It is designed for the on-the-fly hardware encryption to flash
memory including Disk Encryption, File Encryption and Dual Encryption (i.e. both File and Disk
Encryption.) The logical cryptographic boundary for the module includes the cryptographic module
software backed by hardware cryptography to support hardware-based cryptographic algorithms.
The module includes the following components:
 Flash Memory Protector Driver
 Flash Memory Protector
The Flash Memory Protector Driver (FMP Driver) is the software component of the cryptographic
module running in the Linux Kernel which calls the cryptographic algorithms implemented in the
FMP hardware module for power-up self-tests, and also holds the FIPS status of the entire
cryptographic module once the power-up self-test is completed successfully. All actual
cryptographic functions are implemented within the hardware.
The Flash Memory Protector (FMP) is the hardware component of the cryptographic module which
supports AES with CBC mode and XTS-AES encryption and decryption for confidentiality on storage
devices. It resides in the Samsung Exynos Processor 8890. It is located between the external
DRAM and Flash memory Device so that it can encrypt and decrypt the data quickly and reduce
power consumption.

While that particular module specifies disk encryption I have seen speeds multitudes in excess of those the OP is reporting, so hardware shouldn't be the issue in his case.

I do a lot browsing & streaming on the phone so do need good speeds.

Switching VPN profiles sometimes helps but generally just switching off then I need to stream, which isnt ideal.
