Random slow speeds upon new connections to server clusters

Recommended Posts

Hello, I've used AirVPN on and off for sufficient time to report. Overall it's been very good and the connection options are the highlight.

Recently whenever I connect to a cluster of VPN servers - any server in Alblasserdam, NL for example - there is a 3/4 chance that the speeds are terrible - as low as 50Kbyte/s - unusable. If I disconnect and reconnect a few times to the same server or one in the same cluster, within 10 tries I get a connection that's full speed, or 3Mbyte/s and over.

This only happens on servers from clusters. It never happens on the locations that only have one server - those are always reliable. From the stats, none of these servers appear saturated.

I connect over SSH and SSL using OpenVPN client with generated configs.

My ISP has never throttled traffic noticeably except for OpenVPN protocol itself, which SSH and SSL circumvent. Using those protocols the speeds are well above my needs, that is, when it works.

The result is I am limited to a smaller part of the Air network if I want to avoid disconnecting and reconnecting 10 times each time I connect. Each time I connect to those clusters is a gamble with my time.

Are there settings I can try with openvpn the next time this occurs? Would forcing buffer sizes have any effect? I have no idea how they interact with SSH and SSL tunneling.

There are most definitely some really wonky servers out there.  I like to use Tegmen as an example.  It's a "Canada" server, with a Seychelles IP addresss (and Seychelles latency from my location.  I get 50ms ping to canada and 300ms ping to Seychelles.  It's in Seychelles.)  Also, speed wise, you are lucky to squeak out 5-10kbps.

It's not in Seychelles

For some reason, Amanah got "stuck" with a few Afrinic IPs and this is the result.

Can you provide a speedtest from 2 NL servers that have the same amount of current users and load?

Not sure why that would made such a big difference like you describe.

Well, explain the pings then? 50ms to all other Amanah Canada servers, 300ms ping to that one. Doesn't make sense.

Your ISP might be using geolocation routing policy.

Terrible approach in most cases but I saw that too, especially in places

where domestic traffic is cheaper than international one.

Post 2 traceroutes and this will explain the issue.

OP:

Same applies to you.

Can you post traceroute to NL servers? One "good" and one "bad" traceroute

should probably indicate an issue on your end. Otherwise there will be hunderds

of threads with NL servers speed issue.

Actually, my traceroutes are eerily identical for two Amanah servers. I tested both Tyl and Tegmen. I got 51ms ping to each. Functionally no difference on any single hop on either server. I don't get it. So when I traceroute, they appear to be in the same location, but when I'm hooked up to it for VPN service, it's dog butt slow, horrible pings to everything, and rock bottom speed.

Those don't seem to mesh.

I was going to record logs and traces this weekend but curiously the problem hasn't happened in the last couple days. It's been an ongoing problem for many months so it would be a hell of a coincidence for it to suddenly be fixed now (doubt it). When it happens again I'll post more info, but I wanted to put it out there.

All I can say more is the problem happened across a variety of linux distros and openvpn, ssh and stunnel versions including the most recent of each.

Got the problem again today. Still a mystery.

This is a third node, this was in NL - 213.152.CCC.CCC. It was temporarily fast but I can't know if these routes matched the fast connection for certain.

These don't make for great comparisons
