VPN Manager for OpenELEC

As lots of users struggle to get VPNs to work within KODI (me included, failed via the Brian Hornsby/OpenVPN route) and there isn't yet a specific add-on for AirVPN, how about getting yourselves on VPN Manager for OpenELEC?

The developer, zomboided, seems very open to adding in new VPN suppliers and it would broaden your appeal!

I initially managed to install the VPN on Kodi (raspberry) with the tutorial http://brianhornsby.com/blog/how-to-setup-your-vpn-client

 

But this add-on (VPN Manager  https://github.com/Zomboided/service.vpn.manager) is much better.

 

Everything presented in a straight-forward manner. AirVpn appears in the list on the available vpn providers. There is some additional features to manage different VPN profile ...

I use the add-on "VPN Manager for OpenVPN" for Kodi and have chosen AirVPN as the VPN Provider and typed in my Username (my email) and Password I also use for my login on the AirVPN-page. As I am still disconnected from VPN: what else is necessary for the set up? Do I need a user key and cert files?

In the meanwhile I have used the generator https://airvpn.org/generator/# (1. Operating System: Linux, 2. Europe, 3. Connection Modes: Direct, protocol UDP, port 443) cause an AirVPN key file is necessary to validate a VPN connection. Afterwards I saved the key file on my USB key and connected it to the Raspberry. Nevertheless, I neither find the key file on the USB Key nor on the accessable drive.

I got AirVPN working but only by using the 'User Defined' option and the Wizard with a generated ovpn file similar to the one mentioned above that I copied to the pi. I can not get the AirVPN option in the manager to work.

 

When I go to VPN Connections and select First VPN Connection, the server for the connection appears to be selected abitrarily and I am not presented with a list of servers to choose from. The server selected is in Sweden. Have not investigated if this is the first one on the list in the generated file.

 

I am using a pi 2 with LibreElec. I can't say I followed all the steps exactly when installing the VPN Manager add-on.

Update to my post yesterday.

 

Went back into the manager again and selected AirVPN as the provider, entered credentials, left the other options as default, went to VPN Connections tab, First VPN Connection and it worked. Not sure what i did differently.

 

Now I can scroll through and select any of the servers AirVPN makes available.

I'm also trying to get this working.

 

I followed dblbeat's guidelines, using the manual configuration. I generatd the opvn file for RPi ((I'm using the B+ model) and imported it into VPN Manager for OpenVPN. I tried both using AirVPN login credentials, and not using them. The opvn file was copied to the destination location under storage/.kodi/

No errors in the log file.

I cannot start the VPN, it tells me that no VPN was configured

 

Using the wizard also doesn't work, no way to specify either the opvn file or login credentials. It just display a message that the installation fails, and to check the log. Where is this log file.

 

Can anyone help?

I got this working on LibreElec/Kodi, using the following guide

This uses the Zomboided VPN Manager add-on available here

I only needed to specify my AirVPN login credentials. I needed the generated OPVN file from AirVPN, but only needed it later during the installation, when prompted.

I didn't use the installation wizard.

Since I also had big problems to get the VPN Manager running under Kodi (LibreELEC), I wrote a little HOW TO (after I reconstructed how I finally managed it!).
That's how it worked for me.
