Network Lock on Android (preventing leaks on android

I have been using airvpn on android using the openvpn app.

My problem is, the vpn often cuts out, then my ip address is exposed.

Is there a way to change the vpn setting on an android to force ALL connections through vpn?

First of all: Which app are you using?

Second: There is a "persistent tun device" (OpenVPN for Android) or "seamless tunnel" (OpenVPN Connect) option which keeps the tun interface engaged when the connection to a VPN is lost. More info in the OpenVPN FAQs (iOS because better explanation):

 

Seamless tunnel (requires iOS 8 or higher) — Make a best-effort to keep the tunnel active during pause, resume, and reconnect states. Typically, during VPN pause, resume, or reconnect (for example when transitioning between WiFi and Cellular data), the VPN tunnel may disengage for a short period of time, normally on the order of seconds or less. During this time, network traffic can potentially bypass the tunnel and route directly to the internet. This option can reduce the incidence of packet leakage by keeping the tunnel continuously engaged until it is manually disconnected, even across sleep/wakeup or network reconfiguration events.

Ah, it looks like the "Seamless Tunnel" option with openvpn connect should do the trick.

There is an app called Afwall+ 

It's a firewall that uses iptables and it allows you to restrict the access of certain (or all) apps to VPN.

root is needed though, it doesn't work without.

Yes, it exists; though not sure if superfluous or not because persist-tun is a built-in option in OpenVPN.
