Application not responding when starting AirVPN or Tunnelblick

I am having problems connecting to the VPN. When I start AirVPN or Tunnelblick, the applications go immediately to an 'application not responding' state. They are locked up to the point of not have any GUI and I have to force close them. 

 

I have tried the stable and most beta versions of both clients. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both applications.

 

Operating system Mac OS 10.11.1.

 

Any help would be most appreciated.

I am unable to get to a point where I can generate log files.
