Trouble port forwarding?

Hey guys, I was trying to port forward on the Cephei client. I chose a random port and made sure everything was as should be. And whenever I tried to check my ports to see if they were open. It said that they were closed, I tried for hours and I can't find a solution. Any help?

Is the software that you want to use with the port actually running? If not, the port won't have been opened yet.

Like Nissemus said, something has to actually be listening on the port, when you forward the port on the page all it does is direct traffic on that port to you specifically
