Can't get internet access using openvpn

I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (inside a virtual machine) and would like to use a VPN for all traffic (for now). I've generated a .ovpn configuration file and connecting via 

 

 

​sudo openvpn AirVPN_United-Kingdom_UDP-443.ovpn 

 

seems to succeed as I get 

 

Sun Sep 27 17:26:20 2015 Initialization Sequence Completed

 

and am able to see a connection in the airvpn.org control panel. However, I can't browse websites or even ping servers. I believe that the issue might be that my route table is empty after connecting to the VPN. When I'm not connected to the VPN it says

I'm not an advanced Linux user so I'm not quite sure why this is the case / what to do.
