Differing TLS support on each server?

Recommended Posts

Good Afternoon,

After updating to the latest OpenVPN that was released the other day, I've been paying attention to the connection logs and have found something odd. When connecting to some servers, I appear to be getting TLS1.2 with GCM for the control channel, while other servers are giving me TLS1 without GCM.

XXX.XX.80.146:443

Sun Jul 12 17:4X:XX 2015 Control Channel: TLSv1.2, cipher TLSv1/SSLv3 DHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384, 4096 bit RSA

XXX.XXX.227.148:443
Sun Jul 12 17:4X:XX 2015 Control Channel: TLSv1, cipher TLSv1/SSLv3 DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA, 4096 bit RSA

My current configuration is:

OpenVPN 2.3.7 x86_64-w64-mingw32 [sSL (OpenSSL)] [LZO] [PKCS11] [iPv6] built on Jul  9 2015

library versions: OpenSSL 1.0.1p 9 Jul 2015, LZO 2.08

I am using OpenVPN directly (no Air client) and have all EU server IPs setup with remote-random configured.

Aren't all servers configured to utilize the same protocols and running the same OpenVPN/OpenSSL setup?
