Continually Disconnecting & Reconnecting

Hi,

I am trialling AirVPN to compare it with CyberGhost that I have been using up until now on a mid-2011 iMac running Yosemite 10.10.2 using Eddie 2.8.8 installed via the .pkg installer. Over the past two days I have noticed that the client is continually disconnecting and reconnecting (last night alone for example over 60 times). Any ideas?

I would caution using CyberGhost. The reason being they comply with the DMCA. I would stay clear. Also, if the Eddie client isn't working for you I would suggest a program called Viscosity. It's a one time payment of $9 but, it's well worth because it works splendidly without an issue. I'm using it right now. and you can implement a killswitch script to shutdown any program you specify. Also, what I would recommend you do so that the staff could help you faster is copy and paste the logs in a post here. That way the support staff can see where the problem is and offer a solution.

but I simply used the .tar.gz application bundle not the pkg installer.

Double click on airvpn_osx_x64_portable.tar.gz to uncompress it and move AirVPN.app to your application folder and that's it!

double click on it, enter a root username and password, click on activate network lock and connect to a recommended server or go to the servers list and right click on the one you want.

I tried installing and using Eddie on my with with the package installer and it works just fine. So, its not the installer.

Well, let's the OP try the second option before sending him to a "not free" one. Unless you have shares in it

Eddie is a really good application for Mac.

Then as a free option there is also Tunnelblick, I used it before Eddie.

Eddie has a top noch feature : the list of severs are automatically updated (as soon as a new server is available it is listed in the app) without any action needed from the user. Just open the app !

And I am not working for airvpn nor receiving any love money

Re Eddie .pkg Installer, I chose to use this instead of the .tar.gz application bundle since I saw on https://airvpn.org/topic/13388-eddie-28-available/ that the "Eddie 2.8 package includes an OpenVPN version re-compiled by us with OpenSSL 1.0.1k for security reasons and to fix this bug: https://community.op...nvpn/ticket/328"

so I just tested the package installer and no problem to report, the DNS is the issue.

And by the way you were not right for the version of openssl used by Eddie in the bundle.

Whatever install method you use (application bundle or pkg installer) it is the same openssl version because it is coded inside Eddie.

To see what version of openssl Eddie is using you have to look in the tab Logs and for both install methods you will see:

Maybe I've found something. In "System preferences/Network/Advanced Settings/DNS" prior to making any changes while connected to AirVPN I see 10.4.0.1, but when not connected my normal DNS addresses that I had set from Google (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4) have been overwritten by those of CyberGhost (95.169.183.219 & 89.41.60.38) despite that app not running. This is on Ethernet, whereas if I check the WiFi DNS I see 10.4.0.1 when connected to AirVPN and the two Google DNS addresses when not.

Should I add 10.5.0.1 while connected to AirVPN in "System preferences/Network/Advanced Settings/DNS"?

I've now replaced the CyberGhost DNS addresses with those of Google when disconnected, and then reconnected. Still getting the disconnections though. I will now try to add the 10.5.0.1 address while connected.

what I can see is that if I manually add the second AirVPN DNS address, and then disconnect from the service myself, the second address is not there when I reconnect, only 10.4.0.1

Hi again,

Yesterday afternoon I closed my Transmission traffic, and left the client connected with the second DNS address entered manually. After 3 hours no disconnect. I then manually stopped the client and restarted it, connecting to the same previous server but leaving only the single client-generated 10.4.0.1 DNS address. This morning after 17 hours, there had been only one disconnect around 6 hours in.

Leaving the connection established, I restarted Transmission. Within a few minutes the first disconnect occurred. It's now been 5 hours and there have been 7 disconnections/reconnections in total. The last one just happened and so it not in the logs below. Could this be related to Transmission/torrent traffic? I can only say that when I have seen CyberGhost to be stable, that was with Transmission running.

Does anyone have any ideas?

are you using wifi? if so do you have a strong wifi connection? i noticed when i am using wifi the connection needs to be somewhat strong... 50-70+ %...if its any lower, i tend to get disconnected alot and or not able to connect to the vpn at all..just a thought. if you are using wifi, try moving your computer (if possbile) closer to the wifi router so that you have a stronger signal, then try connecting and see how long you stay connected for and if you keep getting disconnected...

I am connected using Ethernet, although my iMac's WiFi is also connected but not being used for traffic as Ethernet is the top Network choice. This is also confirmed by iStat Pro which shows in the past four days roughly 20GB of ethernet traffic and almost no Wifi traffic (50MB in/7MB out). The client disconnected twice while I was writing this reply...

Just something simple to check, make sure you system time is in sync with a global timeclock (and stays in sync).

I've noticed I get random disconnects like the above if they tilt off by a minute or more, when they are in very close sync (< ~20 seconds with nist) I never get disconnects (short of real network issues).

I understand you may have that set, but you may want to double check that your time really is in sync with said sync sources. I say that cause I don't know what the normal rate for osx is but in my case I had a windows box that while it would automatically sync every so often (24 hours) but the clock was drifting at an fairly extreme rate (minutes per day when it was under decent load) so I basically had to set up a script to sync it every 2 hours to be sure, after doing that I went from having random disconnects anywhere from every couple hours to every other day to then not having a disconnect for timeout reasons for 3-4 weeks at a time.

Again, perhaps this is not related to your problems but wanted to pass it along for others who it might help.

Any other ideas? The client is still continually disconnecting and reconnecting when Transmission is running, otherwise it is stable for hours on end with other internet traffic, browsing, mail, messaging, etc.

I'm having the same problem. I find it's happening when I have the Network Lock activated - but the clock doesn't re-set after I disable the Network clock. It just keeps on timing out when trying to sync with the universal time server.

Interesting that you're on a MAC, I'm on Windows 8.1 with the same issue.

I just connected for the first time in weeks without the VPN started - using just my ISP and my clock has been running perfectly, so I'm sure it has something to do with the VPN possibly interfering with Clock sync updates.

When I managed to actually sync with the Time Server while connected - VPN client would disconnect and reconnect - and usually to a different VPN server.

I had a lot of twiddling and cache clearing to do before I could connect to the Time Server without the VPN running and get my computer clock to update smoothly again, though.

Does anyone have any insight into this? Would love to know how to avoid this problem in the future.

I changed my clock sync server to time.nist.gov and it has been over 12 hours and I haven't had the ping-restart issue.. the new year probably caused this
