New ISP router blocks torrents(i think)

Recommended Posts

I just changed isp because my speeds increased to double what they were before but every time i start a torrent it downloads for a couple of minutes at most then the vpn disconnects.I've tried protocol encryption in the torrent client and changing port in the vpn.I only went live with this isp yesterday so maybe it just needs a few days.Has anyone had this issue before?Or know of a fix

I just ran a torrent in linux and didn't get disconnected but then in windows i did get disconnected. I'm not to keen on saying my isp (i may be over paranoid) because these forums go out to the ether for anyone to see and i don't want to connect the dots for anyone easily.I am not important but one day i plan on taking over the moon so you understand my unwillingness to say.Plus you get sued just for existing these days(UK ISP)

edit : definately a windows issue

edit again: maybe not a windows issue

I think my pc is mocking me.If i download a movie in bitorrent i get disconnected but if i download a copy of linux in bitorrent i have no trouble.Am i missing something here. Also whilst running linux i can download anything. I'll be back in a short while when i've finished sobbing. If its the router or firewall how can i download linux via torrent? or if the router how can i download anything in linux.I am lost here

I can download other things in windows at max speed just not torrents. I have reinstalled my drivers but it makes no difference.I've disabled my firewall. No change. There doesn't seem to be any solution other than using linux and that is a band aid not a solution

I assume you are using the latest Eddie client on both Windows and Linux.

Here's a test you can do.  Set the Protocol to SSL (in Eddie) in both Windows and Linux.  You should see similar performance and no disconnections.  The ISP can not see your traffic and has no way of knowing what you are doing or downloading.

Regarding the router point of your post:

Are you on a home network where you could temporarily eliminate the router from the equation?  It should be safe to plug an ethernet directly into your ISP modem  ------- > to the computer.  Then do the same test without having a router on the network.  This would be a cheap and easy way to test for whether or not your router is contributing to any problem for you.  Just a thought.

I don't lose connection if i have the VPN set to use TCP. Airvpn support advised me to do this yesterday but in my frustration with my router issue i forgot to take their advice. Over tcp its a lot slower than udp but it doesn't stop so i assume my ISP isn't blocking it on purpose. At first i thought i only had the problem in windows but its on all my Pcs 3 Windows and 1 Linux. So now i am looking for a fix,the old trick of hitting it isn't working .I tried talking to My ISP but i don't think they know much of anything outside selling the product .I have also noticed a few disconnects whilst not testing with torrents. I got disconnected when using speedtest.net a few times and also when i was on two different shopping sites. At the moment i'm reading about MTU and seeing if that may fix part of my problem but i suspect its not the problem. But i live in hope.

iwih2gk i can only connect through my router

Did you do the test I recommended?  Set the Protocol to SSL (in Eddie).  That will block any knowing to the ISP that you're using a VPN.  It's worth a shot.

Hi yeah i tried it and i can download but its about 40 percent slower than what it should be if all was ok but 40 percent slower is better than disconnections every few minutes.  My neighbour has the same ISP and he has no issues with torrents so i think its a faulty router or a wrong setting somewhere causing it to have problems with heavy UDP traffic. UDP is fine when no torrents are involved. I am one of those people that gets good things after a long time waiting and saving but to enjoy it i have to jump through hoops for someones amusement. But hey theres worse things i just remember i'm lucky to have such trivial problems.
