Is it possible to configure AirVPN such that it is only in use when using PTP?

Ya, just turn it on when you are downloading and off when you are not. 

 

In all seriousness, I don't think there is a way. A VPN is designed to route ALL traffic through an encrypted tunnel. As far as I know, only a proxy implemented into your torrent client would accomplish what you are trying to do.

If you are using something else (e.g. Linux) the same underlying principles still apply:

 

1) firewall the torrent client from using the real IP interface

2) configure your torrent client to use the VPN IP interface (commonly used torrent clients all provide this feature)

3) restore the real default gateway in the routing table
