Running AirVpn on employer's network

Recommended Posts

I am rather new to VPNs and IT is not my forte.  I am using AirVpn on my employer's network and a corporate laptop to attend to my freelance work when my fulltime job is slow.  However, I am wondering if connecting to the VPN will cause red flags with the IT department.  I still receive corporate email while connected to AirVPN but my ip address is shows that I am connected to  the server selected at login.  It's a rather small company with somewhat lax IT policies but I wanted to see if my activities are truly safeguarded or if I am simply making myself stick out by connecting to a VPN.  Any advice/input would be greatly appreciated.

The way I see it, if your company has no policies or rules against connecting to a VPN on their network then you should be fine. As for the safeguarded part, there are two statements on AirVPN's homepage that I will insert below.

"Make it impossible to identify the type of traffic or protocol you are using, even for your ISP."

"Connect to any wireless network without risking data eavesdropping between your computer and the WiFi hotspot."

From what I gather, all that your IT department will see is that you are connected to a VPN and your download and upload stats.

This is just my 2 cents. If you are worried about the issue I would open a support ticket and ask the staff this question. The AirVPN staff are very polite and helpful.
