Not connected, Your IP: 18.118.164.100

I've had this a few times since re-subscribing today. The OpenVPN GUI and web site session stats say I'm connected, yet the site status bar and an external IP test show I'm not connected. I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the OpenVPN client.

Any idea why this might be happening please?

Check your IP with another service and post the results.

Then post some logs of OpenVPN GUI.

I did check my IP with an external IP test and it was showing my ISP.

 

I'm finding I can only connect if I uninstall / reinstall the OpenVPN software.

If you're using Windows, the problem could be a DNS leak.

Windows doesn't always do a good job when it comes to separating the DNS server provided by the VPN from your ISP DNS.

Then, all DNS queries would go through your ISP's DNS servers, which is improper and risky.

 

GNU/Linux and Unix type OSes (pfSense, etc.) usually don't experience this problem, I don't know about Mac.

Try visiting the site http://ipleak.net. Its maintained be AirVPN. It will show your public IP and publicly sniffable DNS. In most cases, if you are connected to AirVPN and have proper DNS leak prevention enabled, the DNS entry will be the same as the Public IP. It should surely not be the DNS entries you see when not connected to the AirVPN. If you see the same DNS entries when connected and when disconnected, then your DNS is leaking. 

 

Anyway, visit the site both before and after connecting to the VPN. If the VPN connection worked proper, then the values should be different in each attempt. Note that when connected to AirVPN, under IP Details it should read `AirVPN Exit Node: Yes`.

 

Assuming that works properly, then the chances are you encountered an edge case bug in the AirVPN website. Try logging out of the website, clearing the cache/cookies, refreshing the page, logging in. I am aware none of this should be needed, but still give it a try.

 

Finally, if you are on Windows/Linux, try using the AirVPN client (https://airvpn.org/windows_ex or https://airvpn.org/linux_ex/) instead of the OpenVPN GUI. Btw, any particular reason for using the open vpn client instead of the AirVPN client?
