Windows Client hangs with login input

I recently uninstalled openvpn per the instructions recently released and installed the new version.  After launching the (new) Windows 8 client as soon as I try to enter any text in either the username or password field, the application freezes.  The flashing text-input cursor stops flashing, and the entire form seems to go haywire (size and color slightly change).

 

I've done a number of install/reinstalls to make sure I haven't missed anything.  I am deleting the old program and app data folders, etc, but still the problem.

 

I am running windows 8.1.

 

Any ideas?
