Unable to connect to gateways/servers

Recommended Posts

I have tried shutting down my computer for ten minutes or so and then booting into my Microsoft Windows OS. After booting into the OS, I was still unable to connect to any of AirVPN's servers/gateways.

It was only when I accessed the 'Client Area' of this website that I noticed the following:

Last attempted connection failed 2m 36s ago

Reason: Already logged on 'Pollux'

What is wrong? Have my config files been hijacked and someone is still using them now?

OS type: Microsoft Windows 7

Software: OpenVPN 2.3.2-I003 (client) with OpenVPN-GUI

Config files downloaded manually from 'Client Area'

Hi @thirdworld, welcome. Perhaps you were using UDP and the connection was disrupted?

This happens to me when I am connected using UDP and my connection is disrupted (not gracefully disconected). i.e. I reboot my machine without disconnecting my tunnel. If this happens I go to the Client Area. In the 'Current session statistics' there is an option to 'Disconnect now' I give it about 10 minutes and can login again.

If I use TCP and my connection is distrupted, the server recognizes and terminates the connection on it's end. However, I generally get better VPN tunnel performance using UDP.

TCP guarantees delivery. UDP does not (connectionless). TCP delivers packets, receives an acknowledgment that these packets were received the continues to send. UDP continues to send packets regardless. That is why UDP can (not always because there are other factors) provide better performance (it is not waiting for the acknowledgments).
