Trouble getting good download speed

Hello there,

im new to the VPN scene and struggling to figure out what to do in order to get the best speed downloading - ie without VPN i can do 1.5mB/s and with VPN im struggling to even reach half of that

 

i know about changing servers etc, but i dont know what to look for in the server lists, i also unsure if i should stray from the suggested one it sets up as soon as a i connect.

 

one other thing i noticed though may be normal is the internet network icon on my task bar is flagged saying no internet access and / unidentified network however i am fine to use the internet still

plz help me im a such a newbie

i use windows 10

i use uTorrent

and i use Eddie client with recommended server

 

I didnt use lock server settings before so will try that, but are there Utorrent settings i should be looking at too in order to fix my slow speeds,

i understand that using a VPN etc i am not expecting 100% speed but even on another computer i tried in my house was struggling to get 100 kB/s so i guess as a newbie theres something im missing :s

For torrenting, you'll need to forward a port. That's in the client tab on this site.  Reconfigure Utorrent to listen to the port you've forwarded. Torrenting is pretty futile without doing that. 

 

There's also some additional reconfiguration you'll need to do to get good speeds on UTorrent.  I got away from Utorrent and am using qBitorrent, so I forgot the exact settings but disable DHT, disable Peer Exchange and disable local peer discovery.  Those things can have different initials or names on different torrent apps. Also make sure that UnPnP and NAT port forwarding are unchecked and disable anything to do with IPv6.

 

I would suggest switching to qBitorrent in any case.  There are a lot of users here and you can get specific advice. Plus, it's open source and freeware.  After a couple days of using it, I'll never go back to Utorrent.

 

You can use any of the servers anywhere.  You'll usually get the fastest speeds from the servers located closest to you, but not always.  What I generally do is go to the status page and see what server is running best in my country or whatever country I'm interested in at the time.  If you're into gaming and latency is important, you can sort them in "Eddie's" list by latency.  Find a close one with decent latency.  The servers with stars, indicating speed, are never in my own country so I don't go by that criteria as they're slower than the unstarred servers located closer to me.  But none of them are as slow as what you have described in your post. I usually experience about a 20% or lower hit in speed with closer servers, 30-40% or more with servers in distant countries, depending on which country and if I've just selected a server there randomly or according to the status page data.

 

Network lock has no affect on speed, but until you get used to it, it can disconnect you from everything when you don't realize it or forget it's still on.  Caused me hours of trying to fix a problem that didn't exist until I got the hang of it .  But it's essential for torrenting or other legally dodgy pursuits.

 

Disregard the task bar thing.  It means nothing. The only one that matters is the SSID you're connected to.  That "unidentified network" is your TAP adapter and it'll always show no connection.

 

When you find some servers that you particularly like, put the green checkmark by them.  The little checkbox at the bottom toggles between a list of your favorite servers (with the checkmark) and the entire list of servers.  Generally, Eddie will default to connecting t to the last server you were connected to. If the "lock current" checkbox is checked, it will reconnect to the current server, regardless of if it's in your favorite list or not.

There are two problems you are faced with in your post

- you are using a windows product

- you are torrenting and even worse torrenting with a windows product.

eliminate those two problems and you're home.

 

torrenting is dead and most decidedly dangerous, unless you torrent non copyright files. It might make a comeback but the sites are all but shutdown and the ones left running are poorly structured. I've had some vpn providers (Vyprvpn) forward cease and desist emails to clients for downloading torrent files (Airvpn excluded so far). Mostly a scare tactic but who wants to challenge big money over a crappy movie anyway.

 

windows is far and away the largest spy network in the known universe. To avoid getting into the many technical aspects on how microsoft does this, suffice it to say they are open about their products used in methods counter to privacy and security. They don't care about you period. Do some research and you'll likely be fraked out (apple/mac products are similar in philosophy).

 

To give yourself a headstart on privacy and security select an os that respects these things, like Linux Mint or Ubuntu for example. These os's are very user friendly and most importantly aren't windows or apple/mac ithings. Once you've setup your new os, install Eddie, go into preferences and set it up to your liking, select a server and surf the www in a cloak of secrecy. Enjoy and happy trails

Thanks for the replies - i am trying to figure it out and got some things i changed a few settings in Utorrent and found a server i managed to get good speeds on - i understand that you connect and then get a port number off this site and put into the Utorrent but after that i still have issues? not sure whats going on connection seems all great until i get the yellow ! on my network connection taskbar icon then i get no proper download - and it it comes on randomly? is there something else im missing - the port number i only put into utorrent dont i? :s

Something else to look at is, assuming your Win 10 has been hit with all the Creators updates is to reset the network.  Over the last year my laptop has had great connectivity and speed for a while, then constant connection/stability/speed problems, then back to OK again.  Right now, it's working very well after doing a reset a week or so ago. Only had to re-enter pwds after the reset.   Settings>Network & Internet>Status>Network reset.

 

I tried every config setting imaginable, uninstalled/installed drivers, clients, profiles, spent days messing with gp settings, blamed the VPN, finally gave up and reset. It worked.

I'm on 1703, Win 10 Pro 64.

You select a port number on this site and then plug the same number into the torrent client. Following some other changes to the client - such as making sure it doesn't change the port - is also explained in some of the Torrenting guides which I also linked to further down in the new user guide.

Torrent is not dead, it just isn't what it used to be. With the right setup, you can get excellent speeds. Windows has absolutely nothing to do with torrent speed. I have 100mbit down/up and I can get 70~80mbps easily for recently uploaded torrent files.
