General question about AirVPN tunnelization of traffic

Recommended Posts

I don't know whether I am posting in the right place, please fieel free to displace the topic if it is the case.n is

My question is simple: on a Linux (debian) system, how does the system "know" that it must tunnel all traffic into the VPN tunnel once the client has successfully connected to a server? If network block isn't activated, I see no iptables rules "forcing" all network traffic to go into the VPN tunnel. But if I enter a curl or wget command, I can see that all traffic goes through the tun0 interface, as shows traceroute command.

So how does it work? Why is the usual eth/wlan interfaces bypassed?

Perhaps also see this:

Also, do "ip route" (or "/sbin/route -n") before the VPN is started and again after it is started. You will see additional entries when the VPN is running.

To understand why, see the OpenVPN manpage:

https://community.openvpn.net/openvpn/wiki/Openvpn24ManPage

Look for the explanation of "--redirect-gateway def1". The AirVPN server does a "--push" to send this directive to your client.
