Not connected, Your IP: 44.222.196.236

Hi,

I am experiencing internet drop outs which are an ISP issue currently being resolved. I notice this on my PS4 but when i check my VPN status on PC it doesnt show any sign of drop outs. My isp has told me my entire network is disconnecting for a split second quite often. Can anyone shed some light on how the VPN remains connected to the server and could this possibly leak my IP/DNS?

Cheers.

OpenVPN establishes a tunnel once and only keeps it running with keepalives after that. Also, when key renegotiation takes place it requires a working tunnel. Timeout for both is 60 seconds so if your dropouts are not longer than that your connection is probably okay and there are no leaks as well. unless every dropout triggers a public IP change...

You should investigate those dropouts.

Thank you for your reply, this information helps.

Regarding the triggering of a public IP change this would essentially mean a new tunnel and therefore a complete 60 second dropout?

This would mean that the OpenVPN server cannot reach you on your old IP, making keepalives go into the void. There is an OpenVPN setting to allow the server to change its IP, but not the client.

Now, would you look at that.. you can change your client IP while OpenVPN is connected without a fuzz. Even qBittorrent simply went on seeding.

There's strange magic here. Maybe someone can explain it before I do some research

When the IP address of the client changes the OpenVPN connection is lost. Eddie and OpenVPN will try to reconnect as soon as possible. In the meantime the old sockets of the torrent software can't be used to exchange data, but most torrent clients show throughput with a sort of fuzzy logic https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuzzy_logic (or just an averaged tp on some unit time) so you will not see the throughput going to zero suddenly from the software indicators, not even when you have Network Lock enabled.

As soon as OpenVPN reconnects , the torrent software will be able to open new socket(s) (and advertise the new IP address etc.) in a really short time.

Kind regards
